What to check before you buy

Hall-effect sticks don't drift: Magnetic sensors have no contact surface to wear away, which removes the most common controller failure outright.
2.4GHz dongles beat Bluetooth: A dedicated wireless dongle runs around 20ms of latency. Bluetooth audio can drift past 100ms, enough to feel wrong in a shooter.
Switch type is personal: Linear switches suit fast games, tactile switches suit typing. Hot-swap boards let you change your mind without a soldering iron.
